Open Source Lisbon 2020: 

beyond expectations!

 

November 26th, 2020 — Lisbon, PT // A virtual crowd of over 600 members of various nationalities and business areas, came together on Wednesday 11.11.2020, to hear about how Open Source is reshaping the World - community, and companies - especially in this atypical moment we are living in. 

This year the event had to adapt to the new normal, and this 18th edition of the biggest Open Source event in Portugal was no different. For the first time in 18 years, the event was totally online, bringing to its attendees the best content, the best speakers and, an amazing experience, like every year does. 

The Open Source Lisbon 2020 - virtual experience was the perfect stage for sharing knowledge, ideas, ideals and, many great talks about the open source community and how companies are more open nowadays. One of the main points was Mario Campolargo's announcement about the new Open Source Software Strategy for the European Commission, an important step towards the Digital Strategy of the Commission and how it will contribute to the Digital European program.

The event featured presentations and success cases of national and multinational companies such as Wikimedia, OpenUK, UnlockOpen, Microsoft, RedHat and many more, that are experts on Open Source technologies. Also, it's important to mention the presence of members from Portuguese State and European Commission on Open Source Lisbon 2020, who came to talk about the importance of open technologies for these organizations.

It was a day filled with inspiration, passion for Open Source and tech-hungry guests. As stated by Hugo Oliveira, Syone's Chief Marketing Officer:

"This year's event went beyond our expectations! We had a huge challenge to adapt this event to a totally online experience. But we can say that was a success, every feedback from attendees, sponsors and speakers was incredibly positive. We are truly overjoyed and proud for putting together this great event, and with such positive feedbacks we are already preparing ourselves to make next year's edition even better! And hopefully in person!"

The event was streamed for more than 31 countries, had 32 speakers and 21 talks, presented by CEOs, CTOs, Managers, Solution Architects, Developers, among others, who brought talks that encompassed the Open Source technology by presenting new innovative solutions and case studies.

Speakers included Grant Ingersoll - CTO at Wikimedia, Gijs Hillenius - Expert for the European Commission's Internal Open Source Strategy, Dawn Foster - Director of Open Source Community Strategy at Vmware, René Moddejongen - Open Source Lead at Microsoft, Jan Wildeboer - EMEA Evangelist at Red Hat, Amanda Brock - CEO at OpenUK, and many more!
